Jager had watched her kick the hell out of him with that one blow and mentally cheered her on. “Feel better?” he whispered.
She tilted her head back and grinned. “Absolutely I do.”
The chief of police walked over and said, “We’ll talk later about what just happened.”
She nodded. “I know. I’m really grateful you came, sir.”
“Well, you texted me in the bar. I got your emails earlier today, but it would have been good if we could have had a sit-down before this.” He motioned to the two men on the cement.
“You’ve been in and out for a couple days now. This blew up so fast that there was no time.”
He sighed, pulled his cap off his head and rubbed his hair. “It won’t look so good for the department.”
“Sorry, sir. But you need to know my boss was rooting for Roger to beat the crap out of Margery. He said, if Roger went too far, that was no problem. They could just bury her somewhere out in the woods.”
The police chief stared at her.
“Margery is probably still beaten and broken at home, as per Roger’s usual evening,” she said quietly. “Roger threatened me, and, instead of backing me up, the asshole commander down there warned me to tune up or to get out, that I was not supposed to even be in the department. That I only got the job because my husband insisted I get a position at the same time.”
The chief shook his head. “That’s not the truth.” He shook his head again. “Don’t know why he’d say that. It’s just straight-out lies.”
“So I was hired on my own merit?”
She tried to keep the hope out of her voice, Jager could tell. He gently stroked a hand down her back. She stepped closer until she was standing in the circle of his arms again.
The police chief nodded. “Absolutely. I was delighted to have two of you because it meant you would be more settled. We wouldn’t have the turnover we often have. You’ve done a good job at the department. I’m not sure what the hell’s been going on these last few days. I know I’ve been a little out of the loop because of my wife being sick and all, but I hadn’t expected to come back and find this.” He motioned at the truck. “He threatened to rape you?”
At the word rape, she shuddered. Jager wrapped his arms around her and said, “Yes, he did.”
“Jesus.” The chief turned to look at both Jager and Allison. “Can you come to the station in the morning and give us your statements? I need to get to the bottom of this, and, Allison, you need a couple days to get over this.” He looked up at Jager. “Are you going home? And where is that?”
Jager nodded. “I am going home to Santa Fe.”
“And what about you?” He turned to look at Allison. “Are you going with him?”
She shrugged with embarrassment.
“We haven’t discussed it yet,” Jager said quietly. “Her brother is there now though.
